Our Sunday School

Our Religious Education classes are divided by age groupings and Unitarian Universalist curriculum is selected for each group, with the exception of the nursery. Classes are taught by a team of adults, who remain with their class for the entire year. We have a thematic cycle of curriculum, each year focusing upon one theme. The themes are:

  1. Unitarian Universalist identity, traditions and history;
  2. Christianity and Judaism as roots of Unitarian Universalism and other world religions as they relate to us and have something to teach us;
  3. peace and justice from a Unitarian Universalist perspective and
  4. environmental.

Unitarian Universalists are people who insist on the freedom and accept the responsibility for determining their own religious beliefs. Although we may believe differently, we share an ethical approach to life as articulated in our Principles.

1. The inherent worth and dignity of every person.
2. Justice, equity and compassion in human relations.
3. Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth
4. A free and responsible search for truth and meaning
5. The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process
6. World community with peace, liberty and justice for all
7. Respect for the interdependence of all existence of which we are a part.

How one lives says more about what one believes than any statements or creeds. Love, justice, freedom and acceptance are relational. Thus Unitarian Universalist communities are very important as the places where we live and test our beliefs. Children are born inventive, full of wonder, fascinated with the world and eager to grow. We want to offer an intelligent, loving, just, compassionate, safe and nurturing religious community, where children can be valued for themselves. For these reasons, our religious education program seeks to:

  • Provide opportunities for faith development and experiences in a developmentally appropriate manner
  • Provide opportunities to explore Unitarian Universalist history, heritage and identity
  • Provide tools and frameworks to help children make responsible, ethical choices throughout their lives.
  • Provide opportunities to learn about world religions
  • Provide opportunities for outreach and help to others.
